OMV - TARGU JIU

100 mining technicians will become specialists in green jobs with the help of RenewAcad

Targu Jiu, 27 November 2023 - RenewAcad, the Academy for Counselling and Professional Training for Renewable Energy Sources, and OMV Petrom, the largest energy company in South-Eastern Europe, joined forces to set up a training centre in Targu Jiu (Gorj County), with the aim of supporting the professional reconversion of mining technicians.

In this centre, starting Monday, 4 December 2023, the first course of the RenewAcad - Targu Jiu project will take place, through which 100 people from mining will obtain the qualification of Installer for solar photovoltaic systems.

Specifically, the project that started on Monday, 4 December 2023, is funded by OMV Petrom and is implemented with the support of the Equal Chances Foundation and of RESS - Renewable Energy School of Skills, the largest network of training centres for renewable sources in Romania.

The transition to the green economy cannot be achieved without specialists who master the latest technologies in the field. Through our long-term strategy, we support the training of generations of professionals prepared for clean energy.

Through our collaboration with CE Oltenia we will build photovoltaic parks with a total capacity of approximately 450 MW. We thus contribute to reducing emissions and to creating a new, more sustainable industry in Oltenia.

RenewAcad is a long-term project, implemented in several phases, the first of which is the one presented here, which represents a bridge between education and professional training in the field of renewable energy sources and preparing people for the new green jobs.

The professional reconversion initiative for miners from the Jiu Valley towards the renewables sector, run by RenewAcad, will continue in 2024 with another 100 people. From 2019 to the present, RenewAcad has been involved in introducing new occupational and trade standards and in training over 10,000 professionals for the energy transition.

The RenewAcad centre in Rovinari has already trained 54 participants to become specialists in the green jobs of the future

In Rovinari, on 14 March 2024, the event marking the intermediate stage towards the target of 100 specialists trained through professional reconversion courses and adaptation to the demands of a growing sustainable economy took place at the training centre implemented within the Oltenia Energy Complex.

RenewAcad, funded by OMV Petrom and implemented by the Equal Chances Foundation with the support of RESS – Renewable Energy School of Skills, is a professional training programme designed to give employees in the fossil-fuel energy production sector the skills needed to become specialists in green jobs, in line with the current needs of the industry and global trends of sustainable development.

Within the RenewAcad - Târgu Jiu project, progress is evident and impressive, the project quickly passing 50% of its target thanks to the strong interest shown by an over-enrolment of up to 3 times among those who wish to take these courses. Due to the large number of requests and the increased interest, a possible new training session for new groups of participants is being considered for September 2024.

To date, a number of 54 people have successfully completed the professional training courses. Of the 54 participants, 11 are university graduates, while the rest completed high school or attended post-secondary or vocational schools. Regarding the participants' occupational profile, the predominant presence of workers in the electrical field was notable: 16 electricians, maintenance and repair electricians, or those involved in operating power plants and electrical stations.

In addition, the group of participants also included other trades, such as mechanical fitters (12), operators (8), shift leaders (5), as well as specialists in various fields such as engineers, excavator operators, programmers, fuel shift dispatchers, machinists or workshop managers.

In this context, the event on 14 March marked the completion of the 4th professional training course within the RenewAcad - Târgu Jiu project, where 100 people from the coal industry will specialise in installing solar photovoltaic systems. This moment represents a remarkable achievement for everyone involved.

The event was attended by representatives of investors in regional renewable projects, as well as local and regional authorities and members of the local community. The event also offered opportunities for interaction and networking, facilitating the exchange of ideas and best practices in the field of the transition to renewable energy.
